Troutbeck is a beautiful and lush forty-three acre resort in the picturesque foothills of the Berkshire Mountains. The grounds include towering 200 foot sycamore trees, a serene European setting and an intimate stone chapel.
For much of the 19th Century, Troutbeck served as a home and meeting place for intellectuals. Emerson and Thoreau were guests of the Benton family, who started the local newspaper, literary and historical societies. About one hundred years ago, Joel and Amy Spingarn hosted the Amenia Conference, which laid the foundation for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People by persuading the followers of W.E.B. DuBois and Booker T. Washington to create a unified movement to work for civil rights.
