- review 2018 accomplishments and challenges,
- review the 2018 financial report,
- approve revised by-laws and the 2019 budget,
- and elect new executive committee members.
Following the business meeting, we will be joined by elected state
officials, the Democratic Commissioner of Elections, the chair of the Dutchess County Democratic Committee, and a representative of Fair Elections for a forum on New York State election law.
We will celebrate that on Monday January 14, the new Democratic Senate and Assembly passed an overhaul of New York’s archaic voting laws:
bills that will allow early voting, preregistration of minors, voting by mail and place sharp limits on the influence of money. There are also changes to the dates and the primary process; state and federal primary elections will be held on the same day.
There are also changes to the dates and the primary process; state and federal primary elections will be held on the same day.
Similar past efforts to revise the voting laws and increase voter
turnout died, blocked by Republicans who controlled the state
senate for the past half-century.
It is critical that Dutchess County have a Democratic senator at
the table who supports these reforms; our current state senator isa Republican who opposed the new laws.
